Play Therapy Services

As part of the assessment and treatment plan for a child and their family, play therapy is a treatment method that supports family health, well being and healing.

It is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on the normal communicative and learning processes of children (Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002; O'Connor & Schaefer, 1983). A recent Meta Analysis of the efficacy of play therapy and filial therapy suggested that play therapy is an effective intervention for a broad range of children’s problems across behavioural and humanistic schools of thought, in various settings, across modalities and across age and gender.

Blue Hills holds a belief in the effectiveness of this clinical modality. The practice of play therapy is rooted in and informed by attachment theory, trauma research and its best practice is informed by systems theory. The play therapy department is committed to offering responsive assessment and intervention based in our Integrated Organizational Framework of Practice. The Play Therapy department works closely with Therapeutic Group Services in the co-development of groups to ensure that group programming fits a wide continuum of delivery modalities (ie/ structured, directive, non-directive, experiential, psycho-educational, evidence based, creative and expressive arts, play therapy based etc.).
