Internship Program

Mediation in family matters has become recognized as a true and viable alternative to the family court process.  The profile and type of court related referrals - high conflict and history of abuse and domestic violence - has meant that specially trained mediators are required to meet the growing demand.  Blue Hills has come to recognize that making available a comprehensive training and support network for potential mediators would benefit both our service and the field at large.

Our Internship Program seeks to graduate candidates to the highest FMC (Family Mediation Canada) and OAFM (Ontario Association for Family Mediation) standards of mediation practice.  Interns in our program will be assigned a primary mentor mediator while at the same time be afforded the opportunity of working under the supervision of several mediators.  The primary mentor mediator will provide support and serve as a resource to the intern through the various stages of the internship process. There is a fee for this Program.

Our internship program prerequisites:

  • An advanced course in family mediation training from a recognized Mediation Training Program;
  • An advanced course on domestic violence and power imbalance with a focus on crisis intervention in high conflict cases and safety planning;
  • Professional education as per the OAFM standards for practicing mediators;
  • Application/Interview, criminal reference check, development of learning contract.

Our internship program will provide:

  • 100 hours mediation experience (OAFM standard);
  • A comprehensive internship binder with extensive resource information;
  • Site orientation and site specific training;
  • Mediation experience through progressive stages of:n
    • Observation
    • Co-mediation as participant
    • Co-mediation as lead
    • Mediation with in house supervision

  • Access to training tools such as two way mirror and/or video/audio recording
  • Exposure and feedback from several experienced mediators
